Do you consider yourself a team player?
Jan 21, 2015 snmbala

The interviewer wanted to know how well you go with other team members like PM, Developers, testers, etc. UX is a collaboration role. It would help if you connected with multiple people every day to learn new things and ideating solutions. That depends on how curious you are and tempted to solve problems.

Some designers think they are not a good team player because they are introverts. They confuse the curiosity with the social connection. I have seen many introvert designers who are excellent team players. Since the conversation here is contextual, they feel comfortable connecting with the respective people and run the project successfully.

People who are not open-minded and willing to share their thoughts with others are quite risky to be part of the team. Maybe at the earlier stage, you might get some help, but later you should coordinating your tasks without anyone’s help.

Explain the interviewer with a few good examples of your team player skill that will give them reasonable confidence.

Sample Answer:

In my current team, there are about 38 designers. In our team meeting, I frequently present the designs I’m working on and feedback on them. Whenever I start with a new project, I connect with SMEs to learn the subject better and the core problem which we are solving.

I will be part of the engineering team to learn the technical challenges in solving them. Once I have a fundamental understanding of the problem, I would share the estimate to the PM and update my progress periodically. Once I have the prototype ready, test it with the user, and finalize the best design with PM. Followed by share the deliverables to the development team and be part of the sync up calls address their challenges.
