Navigating Design Careers
Online Webinar

About this Event

RVA Design Group is committed to increasing the accessibility of design and technology to the Richmond community.

With the effects of racial and social injustices and a looming pandemic, we are experiencing a time of uncertainty where we finally recognize something that has been missing. We are hosting Navigating Design Careers introduce and design to people who we have overlooked for far too long. These events are for professionals who want to shift careers and students who have not been allowed to consider it for their future.

Session 1:UX Career Panel Discussion 9/25 @ 12-1 pm

Moderator

Danielle Scott Patxot | Experience Designer | Co-host of Just Us Podcast

Danielle represents a third of the Just Us Podcast, an exploration of topics in product and experience design from three emerging creatives. As an alumni of the VCU Brandcenter and the 4A’s Multicultural Advertising Internship Program (MAIP), she is embarking on her own career in design. Her interests often center around empathy, small group facilitation, and the persons at the heart of person-centered design.

Panel: Four designers, researchers and content experts across product and agency design.

Crystal Douglas | UX/UI Designer

Crystal is a designer with a focus on product and user interface design. She joined COLAB Digital Agency as a UX/UI Designer, where she is a part of the entire project process from strategy and design to testing. Crystal pushes the bounds of her career by continuously learning and staying connected with the UX, design, and tech industry. Outside of the web, Crystal tends to spend most of her time (and money) on her wardrobe, wine, home decor, and Shyndigz.

Michelle Hulme-Lippert | UX Researcher

Michelle recently joined The Zebra in Austin, TX, as a UX Researcher after transitioning into UX Research from academia, where she was a Spanish professor and Latin American studies researcher, most recently at Randolph-Macon College. She is very grateful for the incredible UX community she got to know through the Richmond Design Group, UXPA, and other professional groups that made her transition into the field possible, and she loves talking to people considering careers in UX.

Amber Shiflett |Content Strategist | Strategic Storyteller

A Richmond native and VCU grad, Amber spent seven years crafting copy for job seekers and gig workers at Snagajob. Now, she’s leading content strategy at a local start-up, Cix Health. When she’s not working her magic with words or doing user research, Amber spends her free time hanging with her Yorkie and mixing tiki cocktails.

Session 2: TBA 10/23 @ 12-1 pm

There’s plenty of resources on how to land your first job in UX — we want to help you take the next step…and the next. When you’re getting started, every new project is an opportunity, but how do you identify the ones that will prepare you for your next role? What skills and experiences are hiring managers looking for in mid-to-senior level positions? And once you achieve Senior-level, what’s next?

Sunny Stueve | Senior UX Architect

Sunny Stueve is a Senior User Experience Architect in Washington, DC. For the last several years, she has focused on incorporating human-centered methodologies, intuitive design, and research into the agile processes of complex, large-scale, enterprise applications in support of National Security missions. She’s currently leading a UX team in support of the US Customs & Immigration Services. Sunny is a user advocate, a UX evangelist, a minimalist designer, an empathetic listener, and a lifelong learner.

Jabali Williams | Director of User Experience

As Director of User Experience, Jabali’s impact spans both clients and disciplines. From working on multiple award-winning website redesigns to leading the growth of the user experience discipline—to include both content strategy and UX/UI design—Jabali walks the line between hands-on support and strategic oversight.

Jabali can be found regularly at local UX events and has spoken at several meetups, conferences, and institutes of higher education including: GoodGovUX, UXPA, and the University of Maryland.
